Chapter 26

Hale

I paced next to the window in Koen’s office as he spoke to Caeus on the phone, who was driving back with Aylen in tow. I was getting a headache with all the artificial lighting from the flickering neon signs and holographic billboards on the buildings around us, as well as Koen’s computer monitors, that he’d barely taken his eyes off in hours. I didn’t know how he stared at those things as much as he did. But then again, he was capable of healing any damage to his retinas and could stop a headache in its tracks.

Our girl had done surprisingly well on her first job, taking down eight of Fenner’s guys before Caeus and Grim had to intervene. But I was pissed at him for not stepping in sooner. He should have realised she was overwhelmed and jumped in before she’d gotten shot. Still, it could have been so much worse. I had to try and focus on the positives.

When I’d heard the first gun shot on the live feed, my entire body went rigid with fear. She was so close to meeting her end that I instantly regretted sending her into that situation. We shouldn’t have been testing her like that; Caeus should have sent Grim in there with her. Hell, he should have gone in there with her. There was no need to see what she was capable of; we knew what she could do. Next time, we weren't taking any chances.

Caeus told us that Aylen’s shoulder was fine after one of our guys stitched her up on scene. But I knew Koen would want to take a look at it when she got here. He was practically foaming at the mouth with concern. Nobody was good enough to heal our wounds; only Koen himself. And it seemed he held the same opinion when it came to our Little Viper. His knee had been bouncing up and down for the past thirty minutes, and his hair was wild from the number of times he’d run his fingers through it.

They finally arrived, and Caeus led Aylen to our office, which she glanced around curiously. I suspected she’d looked in here after her little demonstration the other night, but Koen assured me she hadn’t; he’d checked the security footage. The room was fairly typical of an office; one wall was taken up entirely by a bookshelf while the one on the left was one big window. Koen’s desk sat on the right, and he had six monitors neatly arranged on the wall. The only thing on his desk was the sleek keyboard, track pad and tablet. He hated clutter. There was a chestnut leather sofa on the remaining wall, next to the door, and a standing lamp in the corner. That was it.

“Hey,’ I smiled at Aylen as she met my gaze. “How’d it go?”

Koen swivelled around in his fancy desk chair to face her, and I remained standing by the floor-to-ceiling window.

“Like you don’t know,” she scoffed and slumped down on the sofa like she owned the place.
